Start-to-finish win for James Moffat at Symmons Plains

It was a dream run for James Moffat as he took victory in the opening race of the Supercheap Auto Trans Am Series at AWC Race Tasmania, Symmons Plains.

Moffat led the pole sitting All American Driveline Ford Mustang of Ben Grice and Tim Slade made a successful late run for the podium in The Racing Academy entry.

Moffat got the drive in his Valvoline LMCT+ GRM Ford Mustang took the outside line and held the lead exiting the first few corners as Grice remained second ahead of Dalton.

The NAPA Auto Parts Ford Mustang of Jett Johnson was a big loser in the opening corner scuffle, being pitched to the in-field.

Another to drop out of contention was the Sydney Property Care GRM Ford Mustang of Edan Thornburrow.

Moffat continued to lead as Grice and Dalton despite a lock up at the hairpin retained third, but had his more experienced teammate Owen Kelly pressuring him. It proved too hot as Kelly moved through on Dalton as did The Racing Academy’s Slade.

Making moves early was Elliot Barbour in the DJ Pioneer Chevrolet Camaro up sixth until he slowed exiting the hairpin, which stopped on the back sweeper and a safety car was called.

Moffat held sway in the restart, but the All American Driveline Mustang was menacing in his mirrors.

However, it was Moffat extending his advantage as Kelly challenged Grice and Jaylyn Robotham in the Bushwakka/The Racing Academy Ford Mustang made the move on Dalton at Turn 2 right before a second safety car.

This time it was for The Racing Academy Ford Mustang of debutant Cody Gillis stopped on the outside of the hairpin.

It was all out attack at the restart behind the leading duo as Slade made a late move on Kelly at the penultimate corner to demote him off the podium, with Robotham in fifth.

Dalton was sixth from Tom Hayman in another impressive display from Adam Garwood, Brett Holdsworth and Tyler Everingham rounded out the top 10.

In Masters Cup, it was Craig Scutella after John Holinger spun at the hairpin and Mark Crutcher failed to start.

Racing continues tomorrow for the Supercheap Auto Trans Am Series at 12:50pm AEDT.
