GRM has been the dominant force in Trans Am for two-and-a-half years, but a stunning mid-season run for Todd Hazelwood has now nudged TFH Racing ahead in an enthralling battle for supremacy.
Hazelwood’s form continued today at EVENTelec Race Queensland, winning the third of four Trans Am races to overhaul James Moffat in the standings.
Moffat won the 2023 title and has led for the bulk of this year, but has found himself in damage limitation mode all weekend at Ipswich where Hazelwood, Nathan Herne and Jordan Boys have been the class of the field.
The start proved decisive yesterday as Hazelwood and Herne went one apiece, and the duo made an incredibly even getaway from the front row of the rolling start in Race 3.
Hazelwood just hung on as Herne even poked his nose around the outside on the first run into the Turn 3 hairpin.
But there was no way past, and Herne was left to trail all the way to the end of the 18-lapper with just 0.1857s the final margin.
Boys kept his, Hazelwood and Herne’s collective podium lockout intact, as Moffat was a distant fourth.
Moffat had been locked in combat with GRM teammate James Golding until the latter encountered gearbox troubles.
With his #31 machine stuck in third gear, Golding dropped outside the top 10 and eventually pitted for a remedy, at least making the finish in 20th and last.
That represents a blow to his title hopes, while Moffat slides to 13 points behind Hazelwood, who’d started the day with a six-point deficit.
Elliott Cleary, Jordan Cox, Edan Thornburrow and Elliot Barbour ran fifth through eighth, while Jackson Rice drove from the back of the field to ninth.
Series returnee Brett Holdsworth rounded out the top 10, ahead of Pro-Am winner Josh Thomas in outright 11th.
One more race is to come today at 3:35pm, where another 60 points will be awarded to the victor.
