Hazelwood Strikes Back in Race 2
Todd Hazelwood’s mid-season surge has taken its latest leap to turn up the heat on reigning Trico Trans Am champion James Moffat.
Having had to stalk Nathan Herne to finish the line in the opening Trans Am encounter at EVENTelec Race Queensland, the tables turned in Race 2.
This time it was Hazelwood who got the jump to grab the lead – and a 0.6s margin by the time the field reached the back straight – from Herne.
The #29 Mustang driver wasn’t about to throw in the towel though, filling up Hazelwood’s mirrors in an effort to force a mistake.
But the TFH Racing driver was up to the task and broke the back of Herne’s challenge heading into the closing stages.
By the time the chequered flag flew, the margin had stretched to 1.2806s after what had been very much a two-horse race.
Jordan Boys banked another solid haul of points with his second successive third-place finish, as Garry Rogers Motorsport’s James Golding and James Moffat rounded out the top five.
Moffat’s ability to gain two places on his starting slot means he hangs onto the overall points lead, but his hopes of back-to-back titles are becoming increasingly complicated.
The red-hot Hazelwood is now just six points shy of Moffat, with another two races to come tomorrow.
Elliott Cleary put in a stunning drive from last to sixth after clutch issues had forced him out of the earlier Saturday race.
Jordan Cox was another to make gains, finishing eighth behind Edan Thornburrow.
Josh Thomas was 10th and once again best of the Pro-Am field, ahead of Mark Bailey and Lee Stibbs.
John Holinger finished 17th after an opening lap spin but he was at least classified – which is more than could be said for Jackson Rice, Tom Davies and Domain Ramsay.
The penultimate race of the weekend is scheduled to start 1:05pm tomorrow.
