Hazelwood, who enters the weekend 41 points behind series leader James Moffat, was the man to beat throughout the 20-minute opening session on a chilly Ipswich morning.

The #111 TFH Racing Mustang lit up the timing screens from the get-go, setting one purple lap after another to get down to a 1m11.2882s.

He then improved that further to 1m11.2616s, which would go unchallenged.

In fact, it was enough to give him a 0.2071s buffer to second-placed Jordan Boys, who is also hot on the heels of Garry Rogers Motorsport stars Moffat and James Golding in the overall standings.

Nathan Herne made a strong start in his first event back in Mustang machinery, having swapped out the Dodge Challenger body panels he’d previously been running.

Herne was third from Moffat, Elliot Barbour, Jackson Rice, Elliott Cleary, Golding, Jordan Cox and Edan Thornburrow in 10th.

Capping a productive Practice 1 for TFH was Josh Thomas taking 11th in the 21-car field to be top of the Pro-Am runners.

Practice 2 for the Trico Trans Am Series is scheduled for 12:40pm, ahead of qualifying in the afternoon.
