Thornburrow to Make American Switch in 2025
The Trico Trans Am Series’ most tenured driver, Edan Thornburrow, will depart the series in 2025 in pursuit of a full-time drive in the CUBE 3 Architecture TA2 Series in North America.
At just 21 years of age Thornburrow is a veteran of the category, having amassed a remarkable 79 starts from the series’ 85 classified races since Trans Am burst on to the Australian scene at the 2020 Adelaide 500.
“I was probably one of the younger guys that started at 17, now I’m 21, I’ve done it for four years, and it’s just simply I just want a bit of change,” Thornburrow told Speedcafe.com
Thornburrow achieved a runner-up finish in the category’s maiden full season in 2021, running a privateer entry across his first two seasons as a Trans Am driver. In 2023 Thornburrow made the move to Garry Rogers Motorsport, where the Sydney based driver consistently challenged the front alongside his experienced teammates.
“There are not many options in Australia when it comes to cost-effective racing in fast cars. Rather than making that jump to say a different category, I’m able to stick to the same cars, which is what I know, but expand and broaden my network of people being in America,” Thornburrow continued.
“The hope would be to go over there in a car that I know and really I’m just hoping for an opportunity, to be picked up over there and someone come and say, ‘You know what, come and drive my car’ or something like that.”
The American pathway has already been proven as a viable career trajectory for stars in the Trico Trans Am Series, with two-time series champion Nathan Herne taking to the U.S.A across the past two seasons.
Similarities between Herne’s experience and Thornburrow’s don’t stop there, with the 21-year-old also set to spend time at Howe Racing’s Michigan facility.
“I watched Nathan do it. He was younger at the time, but he made the step up and obviously did really well – showed that Aussies can drive. Definitely watching him was an inspiration and it gave me the idea to go over there. He’s also been someone that I’ve picked up the phone and had a question about it,” Thornburrow explained.
“Watching other Aussies make the jump over there definitely planted the seed in my mind to think that it’s time and effort well spent.”
Round one of the 2025 Trico Trans Am Series takes place at Symmons Plains Raceway from March 22-23 as part of Hi-Tec Oils Race Tasmania.
