Moffat Denies Hazelwood in Qualifying Thriller

James Moffat stole pole position for the Trico Trans Am Series round at Race Tailem Bend after a thrilling qualifying session.

Moffat and Todd Hazelwood traded fastest laps throughout the 20-minute session, held under clear skies but on a track still wet from rain throughout the day.

Conditions improved with every lap, with the benchmark time coming down by over two seconds as the beginnings of a drying line emerged.

Hazelwood had the edge as the clock ticked towards zero, but both contenders were able to find clear space for their final flyers.

Moffat moved ahead with a 1m31.6838s as the chequered flag waved, securing the Trico Pole Award when Hazelwood unable to improve on his final tour.

Points leader James Golding was next best in third, and looked poised to improve on his final lap until encountering Elliot Barbour in the middle sector.

Local racer Lee Stibbs took an impressive fourth place in the tricky conditions, having his first Trico Trans Am Series race of the season in a third Dream Racing Australia entry.

Former series victor Nathan Herne was next from Tim Slade, while Tom Davies, Nash Morris, Jackson Rice and Jordan Boys rounded out the top 10.

Ben Grice lines up 11th despite missing the entirety of Practice 2 with a driveline failure.

The Trico Trans Am Series hits the track at 10:10am tomorrow morning for the first of two races on Saturday, with two more races on Sunday to complete the weekend.
