Morris prevails in Trans Am race two
Nash Morris has kicked off Saturday’s National Trans Am Series action on a high, taking an emphatic victory ahead of race one winner James Moffat.
There were shades of the opening race at the rolling start, with the two frontrunners going side-by-side into the first couple of corners. However, this time it was Morris who would prevail.
The duo then endured an epic battle as Moffat attempted to take back the position, but despite his aggressive approach, was unable to get the move done.
The stunning red Supercheap Auto Racing Ford Mustang then started to build a gap at the front, before a safety car was required after a puncture to Elliot Cleary’s The Racing Academy-backed Mustang – his second DNF is as many races so far this weekend.
A one-lap dash then brought race two to a close, with Morris nailing the restart to cross the line half a second ahead of Moffat.
The battle for third place saw a similar encounter, with Cody Gillis this time coming out on top of AWC’s Lochie Dalton after the latter got the best of the All American Driveline entry in race one.
Gillis made the move in the early stages of the race and put in a veteran’s performance to hold off the title contender for the final spot on the podium.
It was another top-five finish for Edan Thornburrow, who made it to the end of the race despite a trail of smoke behind his Sydney Property Care Mustang for the vast majority of the race.
Missing out on the coveted top-five finish was Tim Brook, but was lucky to not lose the place to a rapid Tom Hayman behind – who was arguably the driver of the day after pulling off some impressive overtakes throughout.
Next up was Elliot Barbour, who was unable to make his way through the field in his usual fashion but still crossed the line for back-to-back top 10 finishes ahead of Ben Grice in the matte black I.C.L Racing entry.
Rounding out the top 10 was Kyle Gurton, an impressive result in his first round of the year under the Waltech Motorsport banner.
Making some moves in the Masters Cup was Dream Racing Australia’s Craig Scutella, who also improved to 14th outright ahead of the lead Hoosier Cup runner, Chris Pappas.
John Holinger would have to settle for second place in that Masters class, while a spin for Nick Lange meant he would cross the line as the final classified finisher.
Much like Cleary, Mark Crutcher made it two DNFs for the weekend as well after contact in the early phase of the race forced the New South Welshman into the pits.
The third race of the weekend for National Trans Am Series will take place at 5:40pm AEDT.
