Trans Am opening race declared non-result

The first National Trans Am Series race of the weekend has been declared a non-result, after a plethora of first lap incidents resulted in the contest dramatically being cut short.

The race began in straightforward fashion as The Racing Academy teammates Cody Gillis and Elliot Cleary go side-by-side through the first two corners after the rolling start, before Cleary took the lead and started creating a gap.

Pioneer DJ’s Elliot Barbour followed the duo through in third place while Sydney Property Care’s Edan Thornburrow was steady in fourth despite multiple attempts at a move in the lap.

But all the drama started to unfold behind the quartet, first when John Hollinger ran into the back of All American driveline’s Ben Grice – resulting in a multi-car pileup that saw Shaun Richardson also take the bulk of the damage.

While Richardson was able to crawl back to the pits with damage, the same couldn’t be said for Grice and Hollinger.

The two Garry Rogers Motorsport title contenders in Lochie Dalton and James Moffat had carnage of their own, with Dalton heading straight into the pits as a result, meaning the AWC team will need to work hard to get the car ready for the remaining three races.

The returning Total Parts Plus entry of Tim Brook was also involved in the incident too, hitting a rough join off the track after he attempted to avoid the Ford Mustangs ahead – damaging the right from of his Dodge Challenger in the process.

With the race being declared as a no-result, no series points will be rewarded, and the grid will return to its original order for race two later this afternoon.

Race two of the National Trans Am Series at Queensland Raceway will take place at 2:15pm AEST.
