Morris leads Thornburrow in Trans Am classic
Nash Morris is celebrating his 20th birthday in style after taking victory in yet another classic National Trans Am Series encounter.
The birthday boy led Edan Thornburrow and James Moffat across the line under safety car conditions after the yellow flags were waved when Tyler Everingham’s Dream racing Australia Chevrolet Camaro went off on lap 10.
Morris was fast off the line in his Supercheap Auto Ford Mustang, taking the lead ahead of the polesitter and race one winner Owen Kelly as they approached turn one.
The leader then found himself under immense pressure from Kelly throughout the early and middle stages of the race, with their battle opening the door for Thornburrow and Ben Grice to join the party.
Punters were treated to an entertaining battle at the front, before the situation was escalated when Kelly was in the tyre wall after being tagged by his teammate in Thornburrow.
Grice took full advantage of the drama and worked his way up into second place but was unable to hold off the determined Thornburrow, who had eyes on a return to the podium.
After a race to forget on Saturday, Moffat was one of the drivers of the session as he charged his way through the grid after starting from dead last, eventually finding himself within reaching distance of Grice and the leading pack.
The drama then escalated even further after the safety car was deployed, with Moffat making a slick move on Grice just as the yellow flags were being waved.
As a result, the series leader coming into Phillip Island was provisionally in third.
But the race belonged to Morris, who was understandably thrilled with the result and becoming the third race winner in 2023.
“It feels bloody good. I probably didn’t have the pace to win that but I put the car in the right spots and got a bit lucky with Owen being taken out there, but as I said yesterday luck happens and it’s good to be on the good side of it for once,” Morris said.
“I sometimes do some racing down at the Norwell Motorplex, so I tried to do use some of those moves there and I think it paid off.”
The third race of the National Trans Am Series at Phillip Island, which you can watch via Stan Sport at 3:25pm AEST.
