Brett Holdsworth’s podium joy

It was a classic case of practice form not dictating weekend results for Breeze Holiday Park supported Brett Holdsworth discovered at Sydney Motorsport Park.

Entering his first full season of Turtle Wax Trans Am Series after joining Ashley Seward Motorsport this season, Holdsworth recovered from being 13th and 15th in the two practice sessions to score his best qualifying result of the season with third.

“We made some big setup changes after practice and ventured into some territory we’d never gone before on that front, but we also had green tyres on it for qualifying,” explained Holdsworth.

“We think a lot of the issues may have been just rubbish tyres, our practice tyres were the same ones we thrashed on the Mountain.”

In what was a thrilling battle for third in the opening race, Holdsworth won out to make his maiden appearance on the podium and mount a serious challenge on the title.

Race 2 proved frustrating as the tyres dropped off, but the reason was found post-event as he finished ninth, his lowest position for the year.

“That was pretty frustrating,” Holdsworth lamented.

“We got a bit lucky that in the same race some of our title rivals had issues as well. We looked into it afterwards and turns out we just made a mistake with the tyre pressures.

“It doesn’t take much to be off the pace.”

Returning to the top five in the final race left Holdsworth fourth in the points after Round 4 to be within striking distance of Wall Racing’s Tim Brook as well as Garry Rogers Motorsport pair Nathan Herne and Owen Kelly.

“Look I’m really happy with the weekend, obviously I would have loved to get that round podium but the option to pass cleanly never came up and I was pretty keen not to risk a DNF,” said Holdsworth.

“Getting the podium in Race 1 was a good monkey off our back so to speak, it was great to share that with the team after being so close a few times already.

“We learnt a few things this weekend which we will take up to Queensland Raceway and hopefully continue our upward trend.”

The Turtle Wax Trans Am Series battle resumes at Queensland Raceway on August 5-7 as part of the SpeedSeries.
