Nathan Herne takes first pole of the season at Sydney Motorsport Park

Valvoline Team GRM’s Nathan Herne has taken his first pole position of the season at Sydney Motorsport Park, leading a team 1-2 as the experienced Owen Kelly will line up alongside.

Herne was the only driver to drop into the 1m 32s as he enhanced his title aspirations as none of his rivals had an answer to his pace.

Setting a time of 1m 32.647s, Herne led Kelly by 0.523s as after two lacklustre practice sessions Brett Holdsworth bounced back to place third in his Breeze Holiday Park Ashley Seward Motorsport Chevrolet Camaro.

Holdsworth will share the second row with GRM UP 2/11 Motorsport’s Lochie Dalton, while Herne’s key title rival Tim Brook is back in sixth driving the Andrew Miedecke Ford Wall Racing Mustang. Joining Brook on the third row is rookie Cody Burcher in the PBS Specialty Coatings Ford Mustang.

The fourth row will be one to watch as young guns Nash Morris in his Supercheap Auto Mustang and Dream Racing Australia’s Kyle Gurton line-up alongside each other.

Completing the top 10, debutant Zach Bates in the Sullivans-supported Ford Mustang will share the fifth row with the All American Driveline example of Ben Grice.

Fast men during the day, Jon McCorkindale (Dial before You Dig Mustang) and Edan Thornburrow (Sydney Property Care Mustang) just missed the 10 to form row six ahead of Jett Johnson in 13th, plus Nic Carroll in 14th.

There was a red flag early in the session caused by Craig Scutella, but after this the session ran uninterrupted under lights.

Saturday’s action consists of two races starting with the opening affair at 3:15pm before the second encounter to be held under lights and broadcast live on 9Gem at 6:15pm.
