A fourth-generation racer, Simpson entered the Turtle Wax Trans Am Series following a successful stint in the Queensland Hyundai Excel X3 Series racing the likes of fellow graduates Nash Morris and Jett Johnson.

Son of previous Bathurst 1000 and Development Series driver Michael, Simpson made gradual progress throughout the weekend to drop 3s in time during practice and broke into the top 20 during Race 2.

Further position was made in the final race to end the weekend 18th in what was a solid debut in a challenging situation at Bathurst.

“We are super proud of his achievements this weekend,” father Michael said after the weekend.

“It was his first race at Bathurst and his first race in the Trans Am series. This weekend was a huge learning curve for both James and his team and we are all looking forward to future racing.”

Simpson was delighted by his progress throughout the weekend following an extensive testing schedule at Queensland Raceway where the category will contest Round 5 in August.

“A weekend of learning,” said Simpson.

“A big thank you to my team, Sponsors and supporters for all your help, support and encouragement for my Bathurst and Trans Am debut.”

A large number of friends were on hand to provide support to Simpson’s campaign as he will continue his maiden campaign at Sydney Motorsport Park.

The Turtle Wax Trans Am Series features as part of the third round of the Shannons Motorsport Australia Championships at Sydney Motorsport Park on May 27-29, which is headlined by fellow Australian Racing Category the Supercheap Auto TCR Australia Series in addition to the S5000 Australian Drivers’ Championship and Gulf Western Oil Touring Car Masters s part of the SpeedSeries.

Porsche Michelin Sprint Challenge, the Australian Production Car Series, Radical Cup and the Australian Prototype Series complete a stacked program of categories.
