Nathan Herne wins opening race at the Mountain

Current Turtle Wax Trans Am Series leader Nathan Herne has won the opening race of Round 3 at Bathurst after taking the lead from title rival Tim Brook at Griffin’s Bend on the opening lap.

Paynter Dixon Wall Racing’s Brook started from pole, but Herne put him under immense pressure entering Hell Corner as the pair went up Mountain Straight side-by-side, with the Valvoline Team GRM Mustang taking the ascendency.

All American Driveline’s Ben Grice made a great start and had the best view of the battle ahead from third as he maintained this position all the way to the end.

Fourth was Garry Rogers Motorsport’s Owen Kelly, while Jon McCorkindale dropped a position, but finished a fine fifth in the Dial Before You Dig Mustang.

A tremendous battle for sixth was won out by Nic Caroll driving the Hogan Prestige Cars Dodge Challenger as he battled Brett Holdsworth in the Breeze Holiday Parks Chevrolet Camaro and the Supercheap Auto Mustang of Nash Morris for the race’s duration.

A driver to make ground during the race was ninth placed GRM driver Lochie Dalton and on his first trip to the Mountain racing, NAPA Auto Parts-supported Jett Johnson rounded out the top 10.

Orange-based driver Cody Burcher retired as did MarK Crutcher as title contender Kyle Gurton finished down the field in 12th after an incident during qualifying and a brake lock up at Murray’s Corner.

The second Turtle Wax Trans Am Series race of the weekend is at 3:30pm AEST live and uninterrupted on Stan Sport.
