Cody Burcher’s homecoming at Bathurst

A recent podium finish for rookie Cody Burcher provides added confidence to his Turtle Wax Trans Am Series campaign heading to his home round at Bathurst.

From nearby Orange, Burcher made the leap from National Formula Ford and to Turtle Wax Trans Am this year in the Ford Mustang James Moffat drove to the Sydney Motorsport Park round win last year.

Burcher and his father epitomise the current influx of new, family-orientated entries into Turtle Wax Trans Am. As he prepares for his second weekend racing at Mount Panorama, it’s an opportunity Burcher is aiming to enjoy.

“Obviously, that’s our local round as we’re from Orange, so it’s our home track,” he said.

“I’m very excited for that.

“Going to Bathurst, it is a very daunting track and it is definitely the closest venue on the calendar to a street circuit, plus it’s also one of Australia’s, if not the world’s most prestigious tracks.

“I’m very excited to go there, I’ve only raced one at Bathurst in a little Hyundai Excel, so it’s a big step up.

“Nonetheless, I’m pretty excited to be racing there in front of my family, friends, sponsors and supporters, which is quite cool to finally compete at a home track for us.”

It comes off a maiden podium at just his second event at Phillip Island, Burcher’s confidence is growing.

“On Friday we were struggling, but I guess it’s part of the learning curve,” Burcher reflected.

“Qualifying we were on for a top five, but it didn’t matter due to a red flag and I just kept chipping away during the weekend becoming more confident in the car as it was the first time I had driven it at a high-speed track.

“In the last race, it all came together and we were able to come away with a podium in that last one, with plenty of pace on hand. We started eighth and we were on the back of second by the end.”
