Owen Kelly takes win as rain ends Race 2 before it started

Owen Kelly was the one and only winner in the National Trans Am Series at Phillip Island today.

The American muscle car class was due to hold two races at the famous Island circuit today, only for inclement weather to force Motorsport Australia stewards to cancel the final race of the day.

Kelly’s win was an epic fight with title rival and pole-sitter Aaron Seton. The pair waged a race-long war, but Kelly had Seton’s measure, despite their close proximity.

Nathan Herne finished third in his Valvoline Dodge entry, just ahead of Queenslander Kyle Gurton, with the pair enjoying a spirited battle over the race’s distance.

Tim Brook was not far behind in fifth place, ahead of Brett Holdsworth, Nash Morris, Edan Thornburrow, Dylan Thomas and Matt MacKeldon rounding out the top 10.

The final lap of the race saw a wild spin and smokey burnout from Michael Coulter in what was a race that included some great battles with few incidents.

The second race saw all cars grid up in pit lane in the afternoon, only for the race to be called off.

The second race of the weekend will now be run at 9:05am AEDT tomorrow, followed by Race 3 at 1pm.
